Final Fantasy X has introduced a battle fight system to the series. The
battle system was directed by Tsuchiro Tsuchida, the director of Front Mission's
battle system (Which was a great game!). Even though you can see the battle
system similar in comparison to previous Final Fantasy Series, it is not the
same. You decide the number of turns you'll take, and the order of the
attackers, depending on the situation of the battle you can have at your own
disposal up to 16 turns. Because of this, the battle is now more fluent. There
is a bar to the right side of the screen, where you can see which fighters are
going to attack and in which order. You can actually switch your characters out
during a battle now.
After the battle, there won't be the conventional experience points, instead
you'll earn AP; when you accumulate enough AP you'll be able to learn new
abilities thanks to the new Sphere Board System. Let's suppose one of your
characters raise its "Sphere Level". In that moment your character will be
allowed to move one space in the "Sphere Board", which is some kind of large
network with tiles that you can access from the main menu. After moving, you
character can use "Sphere Items" to raise their statistics or to learn new
abilities, and obviously the effect of the Spheres change depending on which
tile your character is.
There are, as usual, "Limit Breaks" (or Trance) but this time they are called
"Overdrives". There are different kinds of overdrives, and each character has
its own movement. Some of them require pressing buttons in certain order, the
better you do it, the more damage you inflict. Each character reaches its
overdrive whenever he/she deals and receive enough damage to fill up his/her
overdrive meter.
You can call Aeons (a.k.a Eidolons or Summons in previous FF Games) in the
battlefield, and they have four basic commands: Attack, Special, Black Magic and
others (Your Aeons can gain abilities too). They also have special powers. For
more info check out the Aeons section.
